Is there a secondary reason for Trump to push 50-year mortgages?
This is potentially for Forbes.com if there is enough for a genuine story. If not, I welcome responses along that line as well. Deadline is Monday, 11/10, 5pm EST.
I’m not looking for insight as to whether a 50-year mortgage makes sense to most people. Instead, I’m interested in what other reasons he may be pushing this. I understand that 50-year mortgages aren’t totally imaginary. But if there was a lot more activity, what are some of the other implications? Would widespread use mean a need for a U.S. 50-year Treasury bond? What effects might it have on national debt payment? Would there potentially be heavy demand, pushing down yields and making the US debt cheaper to finance? Or is there some other explanation? There may not be, and I understand this could be nothing, but I wanted to check to see if anyone had insight. You can reach me via email at query@eriksherman.com.
